Harambee Stars prospect Zech Obiero signs new deal with Leyton Orient

Harambee Stars 19-year-old prospect Zech Obiero has extended his stay with EFL league One side Leyton Orient by singing a two-year deal that will see him camp at the club until 2025, the club has announced.

Obiero was called to the Kenya U20 squad for the Four Nations invitational tournament that was held in Malawi last month, however, did not link up with the Rising Stars team.

Obiero came through the youth ranks of Orient and made his first-team debut for the O’s in April of 2022, when he started in the 2-1 victory at Crawley Town, towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Since, Obiero has gone on to make nine appearances for the club in all competitions, including a first start in League One earlier this month, putting in a man-of-the-match performance during the 3-1 victory over Cheltenham Town.

Obiero also had loan stints at Cheshunt and Chelmsford City giving him valuable experience of senior football.

On signing his new deal at the club, Obiero expressed his delight by stating:” I’m buzzing. I’m grateful for the opportunities that I have had here, and I am really happy to get it done,” he told the club’s website.

“My journey at Orient has been a rollercoaster of emotions so far, and seeing other younger players such as Charlie Pegrum getting their chances has shown that there is an opportunity for me to kick on as well. I’ve just kept working until I got my chance.

“The whole team has helped me, but players like Jayden Sweeney and Ruel Sotiriou have really helped me coming through as a young lad, and I can relate to them as they’ve come through the academy too.”

Orient head coach Richie Wellens was full of praise to the youngster tipping him for more success in future: “Ever since I came to the club, I have been really impressed with Zech. He’s worked tirelessly on the training pitch and after spending some time away from us getting more used to senior football, he has now forced his way into the first-team picture. He’s a really exciting player, and one that we believe can play a big part in the future of our squad going forward.”
